Maids Sweep Year End Honors

written by Commissioner Gallaway

It was cold comfort for the Mega Maids as they swept year-end honors at the PWL Champions Dinner just three days after losing the World Series to the underdog Canvassers.

Brett Beyerlin was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the Spring Season garnering 56% of the vote in the five man race. Beyerlin did the league a favor and skipped the dinner so those in attendance could enjoy their meals.

Chris Coger picked up Rookie of the Year honors beating out two others with 80% of the vote. Coger who had a post-season melt down at the plate and on the mound gave an emotional acceptance speech that no one listened too. Commissioner Gallaway presented Coger the award as Mega Maids manager Kris Garcia looked on from the crowd.

Less suspensful were the recognitions given to the season stat leaders in nine categories.

Spring 2008: Most Valuable Player Nominees

written by Commissioner Gallaway

VOTES ARE DUE, MONDAY, JUNE 16, AT 12:00 PM

  • Brett Beyerlin (Mega Maids) won’t win any class contests but his Spring 2008 play has been inspired. The reckless way he plays has been tempered enough that he only hurts himself now, not his team. He homered 9 times and drove in 20 runs, tied for the league lead, and his .899 slugging percentage, the lowest of any MVP nominee is deceptive as his superb base running isn’t always reflected in Total Bases. He struck out 7 batters and kept opponents to a .242 AVG on the mound. Only 2 errors all year after averaging two per game last year gave him a sold fielding performance and the most putouts in the league.
  • Patrick Browning (Crazed Mud Puppies) is on the verge of becomming a real PWL threat but needs a team upgrade and a little more consistency. A solid year, but the real bucks come when you make the post-season. He drove in 10 runs on 6 homers and most of the time was just hitting himself around to slug 1.075. He struck out 5 batters and had a .229 OBA. 4 errors give him the lowest F% of our nominees at .878.
  • Steve Dubois (WMD’s) hits the crap out of the ball and in one single game had 5 homers and 2 others that were swatted down on their way out. He led the league in homers with 11, and missed the last four games, driving in 19 on the season and leading in slugging with 1.422. Pitching was a trouble spot, with a .372 OBA but he did strike out 8. He committed 2 errors in the field for a .941 F%. When he gets hot, you might as well throw the ball and close your eyes.
  • Stephen Zigmund (Canvassers) won the MVP last season with numbers that make his Spring look like his ex-girlfriend was playing for him. Though below average for him, he was still a solid performer at bat, on the mound, and in the field compared to the rest of the league…a 3 tool wiffleballer. He drove in 20 runs, hit 10 homers, and slugged 1.333. He struck out 7 and had the lowest OBA of the nominees at .204. In the field in 42 chances he didn’t misplay a single ball, a perfect F% and a gold glove.
  • Charlie Zold (Rated ‘E’) the only rookie nominated for MVP, came late and left early this season, but made the most of his time including winning Player of the Week honors in his rookie season. A previous contract to play Nerf football means Zold is splitting his time as a two-sport star and won’t make the playoffs. His team will miss the 17 runs he drove in, his 1.286 slugging percentage as well as the 7 dingers he hit as they try to advance to the World Series. He kept batters he faced to a .292 OBA and had 2 K’s. 2 errors in the field gave him a .929 F%.

Spring 2008: Rookie of the Year Nominees

written by Commissioner Gallaway

All three ROY nominees are from teams heading to the post-season.

VOTES ARE DUE, MONDAY, JUNE 16, AT 12:00 PM

  • Chris Coger (Mega Maids) is heading to the playoffs as a significant contributor to the team with the best record in the PWL in his freshman season. He drove in 7 runs and slugged .447 for the Maids at the plate and from the mound struck out 3 with a .295 OBA. His second homer was a walk-off to win the final game of the season. He was tagged with one error, lowering his F% to .967.
  • John Heibel (Free Agents) was self recruited to the PWL and quickly became a staple of the Free Agents offense. He drove in 7 runs and slugged .710, with 4 homers this spring. He kept opposing batters to a .300 average, and struck out 2. 3 errors in the field gave him a below league average .880 F%
  • Charlie Zold (Rated ‘E’) came late and left early this season, but made the most of his time including winning Player of the Week honors in his rookie season. A previous contract to play Nerf football means Zold is splitting his time as a two-sport star and won’t make the playoffs.
