Potomac Wiffleball Fields
at Gravelly Point Park
part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway National Park
For the 2010 historic 10th Season the Potomac Wiffleball League is returning to the original playing location where the league began, Gravelly Point Park.
The Park is located directly north of National Airport on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, as well as accessible along the Mt. Vernon Trail for biking and walking. (Our fields are 50 feet from the trail.)
With amazing views of the national mall, a picturesque riverside environment, and directly on the approach path of planes landing and taking-off from DCA, the location will amaze players and fans alike.
The metro is a 15 minute walk along the Mt. Vernon Trail from the National Airport metro stop. Limited parking is available and everyone is encouraged to car pool.
Driving Directions
The parking area is ONLY accessible from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Parkway. (This helps keep the yankees out.)
- If you are coming from the south…the parking area is on the right side of the road, about a quarter mile past the end of the airport.
- If you are coming from the north…the best option is to turn around using the airport. Simply take the National Airport exit and follow the sign toward terminal B & C. Drive right past the terminal and follow the signs to Washington and Airport Exit. Once you get back on the parkway, you will be heading north. The parking area is about a quarter mile ahead on the right.

Fields (2008-2009)

For the 2008 season, the Potomac Wiffleball League moved into a temporary facility while the DC City Council haggled over a deal to build a multi-million dollar wiffleball complex on the Anacostia Riverfront.
Fields are at Ft. Reno Park, part of Rock Creek Park. (40th St and Chesapeake St NW)
The fields are about three blocks uphill (north) from the Tenleytown-AU Metro.
If you are driving there is plenty of metered parking on Chesapeake St and the surrounding areas that is free on Sunday.
There are also plenty of local establishments close by for after Wiffleball social events, most notably the Container Store.
If you are lost, look up, our fields are the highest point in Washington, DC.
For more information on Ft. Reno, check out the Wikipedia entry (the nation’s online encyclopedia of record).
Our favorite entry: In addition to the concert series, Fort Reno is a haven for underage drinkers in search of a nice place to relax. Furthermore, the fenceline on the western hillside provides what is arguably one of the best places to smoke a joint in our nation’s capitol, particularly during a summer sunset.
Temporary Field Complex (while the main fields are under construction)
The temporary field location is next to the stage used for the summer concert series, just immediately to the East of the construction fences and regular field complex.
Field 1
Field 1 is the first field immediately next to the sidewalk and Chesapeake St.
- Left – 85’ / 4’ Orange Fence
- Right – 80’ / 6’ Steel Fence
Field 2
Field 2 is the field next to the stage.
- Left – 85’ / 4’ Orange Fence
- Right – 80’ / 6’ Steel Fence
Main Field Complex
Currently under construction as new wiffleball fields (softball and soccer too) are constructed by the District in conjunction with the National Park Service.
Field 1
Field 1 is the western field, closest to the baseball field. The first base line runs west to east. A large rock sits behind home plate on a direct line through the center of the field. It is a park that favors lefties.
- Left – 85’
- Left Center – 100’
- Center – 100’
- Right Center – 85’
- Right – 85’
Field 2
Field 2 runs south to north and has an intimidating uphill slope from home to center. Fair is fair, this one was built for righties.
- Left – 85’
- Left Center – 85’
- Center – 100’
- Right Center – 100’
- Right – 85’

Fields (2005-2007)
written by Commissioner Gallaway
For the first five glorious seasons of the PWL, reclaimed land along the Potomac River in the flight path of arriving and departing planes from National Airport was our home. The National Parks Service decided that the athletic fields at Gravelly Point were being used too much for athletic events, and decided to steal our land from us. We hate them, and we will get even…soon.
Potomac Wiffleball Fields
at Gravelly Point Park
- Capacity: 45,006
- Location: North of Washington National Airport on the George Washington Memorial Parkway
- County: Arlington, VA

Field 1
- First Used: 2005
- Right/Left: 85’
- Right/Left Center: 90’
- Center: 95’
- Home to Center: West to East
- Description: Our original field and the one used exclusively for post-season games. Fans and players can relax in the shade and still have the best view of the playing action.
Field 2
- First Used: 2006
- Right/Left: 85’
- Right/Left Center: 85’
- Center: 85’
- Home to Center: East to West
- Description: Designed by Deputy Commissioner Stephen Zigmund, Field 2 is a little less flat than the original field, and with it’s equal dimensions all around is a bit more of a hitters park, depending on the wind. Add in a treeline in the outfield that almost every homer will hit, and also notice the cars zipping past on the Parkway and you definitely have a different experience than Field 1.
Field 3
- First Used: Summer 2007
- Right/Left: 85’
- Right/Left Center: 90’
- Center: 95’
- Home to Center: South to North
- Description: The same dimensions at Field 1, Field 3 helps the right-handers with almost no room in foul territory down the left field line. In addition, a tree that slightly overhands the left field fence might give a 4-bagger to a hitter otherwise looking at an out.
