Off Week (Su10): No Wiffleball, But Not Because of Earl

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Rumors have been going around since Weeks 2 and 3 (you might remember those as windy and rainy) that the Commissioner wouldn’t even cancel wiffleball for a hurricane.

The chance to test that theory is lost this weekend as Labor Day has already caused an off week in the summer schedule as Hurricane Earl plans to bring at least some wind and rain to the DC area this weekend.

Don’t give up hope though, hurricane season runs longer than the summer wiffleball season, so more chances remain.

Enjoy the break…four more weeks of wiffleball action remain this year.

Week 4 Preview (Su10): No Rain, No Wind, No Way

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Normally Week 4 is when we pass over the half way mark for all teams.

Due to the extra week added to accomodate the nine team schedule, some teams are crossing the mid-season mark now and some will do so next week.

Regardless, time is starting to run out for teams hoping to position themselves for October wiffleball.

This is also the last week where the two undefeated teams can remain that way, at least on paper. Not since the inaugural 2005 season has a team gone undefeated for the entire season.

After two weeks of dodging the weather it looks like we’ll finally get a break from the wind and the rain. The sun, however, is sticking around. That’s why we call it the summer season.

Week 3 Preview (Su10): In 3-D

written by Commissioner Gallaway

30% chance of the thunderstorms, winds above 10 MPH, without the aid of the storms and not counting the plane gust? Sounds like ideal playing conditions again for Week 3.

Follow-us for updates throughout the day if it’s off and on. If all games for the day are fully cancelled, that decision will be made by 9:30 AM.

Week 2 Preview (Su10): The Legend of Curly's Gold

written by Commissioner Gallaway

More big games this week, but the must watch is the weather.

We can play wiffleball without power. We can play in a little rain, even a touch of lightning. (Bats are plastic, duh.) What we can’t play in though are 58 MPH winds. So, let’s hope those are gone for a while.

Week 1 Preview (Su10): So It Begins

written by Commissioner Gallaway

It has only been a few weeks since the Barnburners picked up their second World Championship during the 10th Season of the Potomac Wiffleball League, but for lost wifflers it feels like an eternity.

We’re not sure how you’ve coped without wiffleball, but there is good news, WIFFLEBALL IS BACK!

PLAY BALL!

Make sure to join us Sunday, August 8, 2010 as we kick off Opening Day of the Summer 2010 Season. Come early to take part in pre-game ceremonies, and enjoy temps in the high 80’s, a welcome break from what we’ve been having.

We’ve got nine teams and three divisions. A little shake up in the schedule has each team playing the teams in their own division four times, and then every other team once. Important divisional match-ups every week for every team.

And, in an expected announcement, Commissioner Gallaway confirmed we’ll be using professional umpires all season, and not just for the playoffs. The umpires will be provided by the Northern Virginia Softball Umpires’ Association.

  • Schedule By Week – complete season schedule by week (we added an extra week because of the odd number of teams)
  • Schedule By Team – complete season schedule by team
  • Fields – directions and information on the fields
  • Rules guide to all the rules, only new change this year is in seeding for the playoffs
  • Divisions – we have three this year, even though we’re down to 9 teams, see how the race for post-season shapes up as the division champ and one wildcard will advance
  • Teams – see who you’re playing against, or with

London: Build Field Day

written by Commissioner Gallaway

We’ve been to London three times, but this is the first year the PWL has had representation at the field building day which take place the Sunday before the tournament.

Commissioner Gallaway participated and took measurements and photos of the field layouts for this year’s tournament. Many are familiar, but there are some new ones.

Special thanks to Ryan O’Neill and Kyle O’Neill of the Colt 45’s for assisting with the field measuring.

These names aren’t official. Brian is going to review them and get me corrections. There are 16 fields for the adult tourney, 14 were setup today.

Photos and layout designs to come.

UPDATE: Follow @londonwiffle for “unofficial” updates and live scoring from the tournament provide by the PWL.

written by Commissioner Gallaway

The second roster change for the 2010 London Wiffleball Tournament has been announced. Nicholas DiCrosta will be taking the roster spot vacated by Tony Cani. Cani had been one of the two main starting pitchers along with Kris Garcia in the Nationals roster. DiCrosta was the Spring 2010 Season MVP.

This will be the fourth tournament with PWL representation, and the second with two teams. The event, the largest slow-pitch wiffleball tournament in the world, will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010.

Washington Nationals Roster Washington Senators Roster
Chris Gallaway, Manager Brian Clapp, Manager
Nicholas DiCrosta Colin Gannon (LF)

Steve Dubois (EH/OF) Mike Lemaire (SS)
Ross Duenas (RF) Jack Shannon (EH)

In addition to the London tournament, there is a possibility that Scared Hitless will be making the trip to Ohio to meet up with the Kalamazoo (MI) Wiffleball League’s Scared Hitless for a cage match to decide supremacy.
