Player of the Week (Su09): Week 7 Nominees
written by Commissioner Gallaway
Another perfect game this week for an automatic nomination, and two of the three guys already own hardware. This is our last vote before the year end awards go up.
VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON
- Jesse Contario (Flaglove): Flaglove came out of nowhere to win five of their last six games and make it to the playoffs. A large part of that effort was led by rookie Jesse Contario, who already owns one keychain this year. This week he helped his team to two big wins, including stopping the Canvassers from being only the second team in history to go undefeated. He hit three homers, drove in seven runs, and slugged 1.556.
- Alexander Filides (Clubber Lang): Filides is nominated for the sixth time, but it’s unclear if the voters are ready to forgive him for wearing a glove in the field, or calling the POTW Award a “joke” after his fifth time being shutout. He certainly deserves some hardware for the season he’s had and there are much more important votes that will be coming up. However, his numbers last week give you one more chance to recognize a weekly performance. He hit two homers and one double, slugging 1.333 while driving in four runs to win two unnecessary, but psychologically important, games for Clubber.
- Kris Garcia (Rough Riders): Garcia has had a great two seasons at the plate, and his one homer, two doubles, two RBI, and 1.222 slugging put him right in the middle of three other players fighting it out for the final nomination this week. He might have gotten it anyway, but what guarantees him the nomination this week was not just because his batting was right on the bubble, but because he threw a perfect game. Specifically, a perfect game against a team who went into the weekend tied for the playoffs, but went home after running into Garcia. (We’re not talking Rossi Posse here.) The first automatic nomination for a perfect game for a player that probably deserved it for hitting this week as well.

Craig Mann of the Flea Bitten Varmits was named Week 6 Player of the Week. He previously won the award Week 3 of the 2008 Summer Season. The Varmits are locked in a five way tie for the final two playoff spots with just one week left to play.

Player of the Week (Su09): Week 6 Nominees

Despite the fact that some players have issued statements (later retracted) after failing to win the award that the “POTW is a joke”, we’re back this week with three nominees. Offense finally returned and the winds were calm, thankfully. We didn’t want to be forced to nominate a guy who wore a glove in the field or anything batshit crazy like that.
VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON
- Nicholas DiCrosta (Canvassers): DiCrosta hit three dingers and drove in ten runs as the Canvassers went 2-0 for the weekend and improved to 12-0 on the season. He tossed in three doubles for good measure, slugging 1.333. He also had a good day on the mound, not giving up an earned run in nine innings of work and striking out five.
- Craig Mann (Flea Bitten Varmits): Mann gets his second nomination in a row after just deciding to hit the crap out of the wiffleball this weekend. He launched five home runs, four of them in consecutive plate appearances. He was one short of tying the single game record of six. He drove in eight runs and slugged 1.909. His timing could have been better, as it only helped the Varmits to a 1-1 weekend but he did put them directly in the middle of a five way tie for the final two playoff spots.
- Andrew Martin (Alcoholics Anonymous): The hole Martin had dug for himself the first five weeks of the season was so deep he needed a ladder to get out of it. Something jarred him to life during Week 6 though, and fortunately for the Alcoholics their 2-0 weekend has kept them in the playoff picture. He went 11 for 17, with four singles, three doubles, and four home runs, slugging 1.529 and driving in 10 runs. He raised his batting average from .095 to .254 and can no longer be called that asshole who can kinda pitch but can’t hit. Now, he’s that asshole that can kinda pitch and every once in a while will pull off an amazing hitting performance.

Player of the Week (Su09): Week 5

Ryan Hawkins of the Canvassers picks up the player of the week award this week after tossing a no-hitter.
Possible player of the year, Alex Filides, comes up short again, this his fifth nomination for POTW. Though, if he’d gotten the same number of votes any of his other times nominated as he got this week, he’d already have four keychains instead of 0. His average votes per week the four weeks prior, 2. His votes this week, 35.

Player of the Week (Su09): Week 5 Nominees
written by Commissioner Gallaway
A no-hitter this week means we have a nominee from the defensive side of the game to join two batters. Filides must be up to his fourth or fifth nomination, (we no longer want to count), but has always been the bridesmaid and never the bride. Mann won the award during Summer 2008, and Hawkins is a pitcher.
VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON
- Alexander Filides (Clubber Lang): Filides is on a tear this season adding two more dingers to his league leading number this week, and driving in two runs. Filides slugged 1.364 and had the cycle for the double header, with two singles, one double and one triple to go along with his homers. Clubber Lang went 2-0 with his help. Though, his contribution to the odd and controversial situation at the end of their 1-0 seventh inning win over Mr. Party’s Waddle was to hit a routine ground ball that turned into a nighmare fielder’s choice pegging attempt that ultimately cost the Waddle the upset.
- Ryan Hawkins (Canvassers): Toss a no hitter, get a nomination. It’s a rule. (Unless three people pitch perfect games the same week, sorry, Clapp.) Hawkins leads the league in ERA and is second in OBA, but his triple crown deams are crushed by Tony Ragano’s strikeout tear. Still, the sophomore is looking for a Cy Young nomination. Though, Cy Young was a career .210 hitter, and Hawkins is south of that. He lead the Canvassers to a 2-0 weekend, and they remain the only undefeated team.
- Craig Mann (Flea Bitten Varmits): Mann went 3-5 with a single, double, and game winning homer to put the Varmits back in the playoff picture. The 7th inning shot over the unlucky Flaglove gave him two RBI to go with a 1.400 slugging percentage and with a forfeit win, a 2-0 week for the Varmits.

Player of the Week (Su09): Week 4 Nominees
written by Commissioner Gallaway
Another bad week at the plate, if only batters had the strike board to blame. Only four dingers all week, and the two guys that did that are below.
VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON
- Matt Dreyfus (Canvassers): Dreyfus gets his first nomination of the summer and his first as a member of the Canvassers, the only remaining unbeaten team. Even though David Gross got the lone GWRBI in the game, Dreyfus was 3-6 batting leadoff and scored the game’s only run. He singled, doubled, and tripled. Any other week, a homer might have been possible for the cycle, but with a forfeit, 1 run was good enough for 2-0 to sit on top of the East.
- Kris Garcia (Rough Riders): Garcia gets his second nomination in a row, hitting two homers and driving in three runs and suddenly he’s back on the list for two the three batting triple crown categories. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get 2 W’s, and the Riders may soon be eliminated from October, sitting at 3-5 over half way through the season.
- Daniel Sullivan (Mr. Party’s Waddle): The mascot, the notorious Mr. Party, finally showed up this week as did Waddle’s manager, Dan Sullivan. He hit 50% of the homers this week, and drove in five runs on his way to slugging 1.250 in his debut appearance. On the mound, he tossed six innings without giving up a run and struck out three. With a forfeit, his squad went 2-0, and if he keeps playing this way, and the penguin keeps coming, they might find their way into the playoffs.
