World Series: And One for the Thumb (Su09)

written by Commissioner Gallaway

The Canvassers swept Flaglove in the best of three game series to claim their 5th World Series Championship in franchise history. The Canvassers have won five of the nine World Series contests, and appeared in each of the first six played, but have been shut out the last two seasons.

Controversial pre-season moves by the Canvassers from the free agent pool have led some to call for restrictions on the signing of free agents, or a waivers system for the PWL. The regular season ended with the Canvassers at a 13-1 record giving them the top overall seed in the playoffs. Flaglove dealt the Canvassers their only regular season loss during the last week of the season. However, they couldn’t stop the Canvassers from picking up the newly created Commissioner’s Trophy.

The Canvassers scored 13 runs, compared to just 3 for Flaglove, all of which were unearned.

Western Division Championship (Su09): Flaglove Flies High

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Flaglove won games one and three of the Western Division Championship Series to upset the heavily favored Clubber Lang and advance to their first World Series.

The PWL hasn’t named MVP’s for postseason series traditionally, but Alex Strong of Flaglove certainly deserves consideration. He drove in five of the seven Flaglove runs for the series. In the bottom of the fifth inning in the deciding game three he also knocked down a Tony Ragano two-run homer that would have won the game, and the series, for Clubber Lang.

Clubber Lang could never get their offense going (.255 team AVG), something that has plagued them all season. Flaglove held them to one hit in the opening game. When they did get men on base, they often ran themselves out of an inning. Tony Ragano got doubled off on a lazy fly ball, and Tim Davin got hit by a fair ball. The league has had five runners called out in regular season for being hit by batted balls, but hasn’t had any since the Summer 2008 season when two men were putout that way.

Nicholas DiCrosta of the Canvassers and Andrew Martin of the Alcoholics provided play-by-play and color commentary during the games which will be posted as soon as it’s screened.

  • Game 1 [ box score ] [ scoresheet ]
Except for a single in the first at-bat of the game (that was erased with a double play), Flaglove was perfect in this game. 12 men up for Clubber, 12 men out. They played small ball with opposite field singles in the fourth inning, and for good measure Rookie of the Year candidate Jesse Contario homered in the sixth for the 3-0 win.

  • Game 2 [ box score ] [ scoresheet ]
Flaglove was just two outs away from a 2-1 win and 2-0 shutout in the series against Clubber Lang but couldn’t close the door. In the top of the sixth four Clubber Lang singles led to three runs and drove Flagloves starting pitcher out for the conclusion.

  • Game 3 [ box score ] [ scoresheet ]
A leadoff single in the third inning for Alex Filides and two bad pegging decisions accounted for the only Clubber Lang offense in game three. In the bottom of the fifth, with John Bernard on first and trailing by one, Tony Ragano launched the game winning homer to left field only to see it get swatted back into play by Alex Strong. Ragano ended up with a single, and Clubber couldn’t score either of the base runners. In addition to saving the day in the field, Strong also performed at the plate. His solo homer to start the game, and his heads up baserunning from third base in the third inning on a Tony Ragno error were the only two runs his team needed.

Flaglove awaits an announcement from the Commissioner’s Office on the fate of the Eastern Division Championship. The Canvassers and Alcoholics Anonymous were scheduled to play their series before the Western Division Championship but the Alcoholics didn’t show up.

Well after game time, Andrew Martin, of AA, arrived to share news that a family medical emergency affected one of their players to explain their absence. It’s unclear what the situation was that kept the other six rostered players away from the game. Postseason games are scheduled around team availability, and all efforts are made to avoid forfeits.

The Commissioner’s office will consult with both the Alcoholics and the Canvassers on resolving this situation.

However, a firm announcement has been made that the World Series will begin Sunday, November 1, at 1:00 PM, regardless of the pending scheduling issue.

London 2009: Early Exits

written by Commissioner Gallaway

The Nationals and Senators both made early exits from the 2009 London Wiffleball Tournament. Both teams fared well in pool play, going undefeated at 3-0 in a new pool play format that was cut from four games to three games.

The 58 teams in the tournament that showed up were then seeded (improperly) in a double elimination tournament bracket based on record, then by run differential. The Nationals had an 8 run differential and received an 11th seed. The Senators had an amazing 36 run differential, but one of their games was reported to the tournament organizers as a loss, and they received a 23rd seed. They would have been a 2nd to 4th seed, though the exact numbers weren’t made clear at the time and adding more math to an already messed up situation wasn’t going to help. (We were told the top seed had a run differential of 45.) Even though no games had started the organizers said they were unable to correct the mistake, so the tournament went forward with that.

Commissioner Gallaway later discovered that seeding overall was done wrong because the organizers had the 1st seed play the 58th seed. A post will be coming soon explaining brackets and seeding, but the bottom line is this: in order for the seeding to be played out properly, with 58 teams, the top 6 teams need to get bye’s in the first round. The incorrect seeding caused major match-up problems starting in round two of the winner’s bracket and all rounds of the loser’s bracket. Again, this will all be explained more thoroughly in a later post.

Ultimately, the unlikely event that could have happend did happen. The Nationals and Senators played each other in an elimination game in the loser’s bracket in the third round of the tournament. The incorrect seeding of the Senators, as well as the incorrect matchups of all seeds caused a perfect storm of events. Despite losing the two practice games the night before, the Nationals prevailed and eliminated the Senators. They then turned right around and lost their next game, being eliminated themselves.

Week 7 (Su09): Settled

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Five teams went in tied for the last two playoff spots, but only two came out.

Alcoholics Anonymous went 2-0 early to clinch their spot, and Flaglove played the late games with a huge upset of the undefeated Canvassers for their 2-0 weekend and playoff spot. During the regular season, Flaglove beat the Alcoholics, so they get the #3 seed.

None of the other three teams even won a single game, let alone a split that might have put them in a tiebreaker situation. Mr. Party’s Waddle and Flea Bitten Varmits ran into a brick wall as the Rough Riders, eliminated from postseason, played spoilers, partly on the back of a Kris Garcia Perfect Game. Joe Buck Yourself wasn’t even close, losing to the top two teams in the league.

  • Eastern DCS: Alcoholics Anonymous (#4) at Canvassers (#1)
  • Western DCS: Flaglove (#3) at Clubber Lang (#2)

In stats news, Tony Ragano came from behind in ERA and OBA to win the first Pitching Triple Crown in league history.

John Bernard, also of Clubber Lang, won the Fielding Triple Crown for Catching (kinda). There are nine catchers tied at a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Bernard has the most time played though. A similar tie, between two people, exists at the pitcher position. The league needs to clarify the fielding tie breakers before it’s official.

Week 6 (Su09): Log Jam

written by Commissioner Gallaway

We played ten games this Sunday, with spectacular weather and cooperating wind. That led to some much needed offense and some wild and wacky wiffleball.

A couple of extra inning games, some big upsets, a few unlikely heroes, back-to-back-to-back-to-back homers, a cycle, and some guy even wore a glove while playing the field. (No, not a batting glove, a full fledged fielder’s mitt.)

Where does that leave us? The Canvassers have clinched the East, and now have guaranteed home field advantage through the playoffs. Clubber Lang has clenched the West. The Rossi Posse and Holey Balls! were formally eliminated from the postseason, and the Rough Riders are just barely holding out hope.

The real issue..the other five teams in the league, all sitting at 6-6 records in a five way tie for the final two playoff spots. Four of those five times forfeited twice this season. Stay tuned sports fans, Week 7 is going to matter.

Week 5 (Su09): Glass Is Half Empty

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Predictions, as they sometimes are, were immediately proven wrong this week as forfeits by teams looking for playoff births meant only half the games scheduled were played.

Alcoholics Anonymous and Joe Buck Yourself both no showed and have put themselves into races to make it to October. Rough Riders forfeited also, bringing the jackass count to three this week, or at least, two and half. Mr. Party’s Waddle and Flea Bitten Varmits aren’t out of the playoff picture with this development, and any more forfeits could prove disasterous to Joe Buck or the Alcoholics.

Football season has officially started, if you are part of the minority of people on the planet who call the NFL football. Regardless, Clubber Lang skipper and strikeout pacesetter Tony Ragano brought his DirectTV dish and 11 inch television to the field so fans (and players) could enjoy their favorite teams on the gridiron while another anemic week of offense took place on the wiffleball fields.

Ryan Hawkins of the Canvassers tossed a no-hitter, getting the Canvassers to 10 and 0, and one game away from clinching the Eastern Division and their spot in postseason. Clubber Lang’s magic number is also one in the Western Division, after escaping yet another nail biter of a game against, this time against Mr. Party’s Waddle.

After three perfect weeks, Week 4 is the forfeit week thanks to our two F teams, Flaglove and Flea Bitten Varmits.

Don’t worry though, we more than made up for the four forfeits with a 21 inning game, that ended with the first loss on the season for Clubber Lang. The previous league record for an extra inning game was 10.

Next week is an off week for Labor Day, but watch your email for a survey on the strike board and don’t forget to join us for Thursday Night Wiffleball a week from Thursday, 9/10 @ 6:00 PM.

Week 3 (Su09): Strike Board!?!?

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Week 3 saw the debut of the PWL’s great experiment. No, we are not talking about breaking the league color barrier, though, that could use some work too. We’re talking about the strike board. The seasons long debate over called strikes and speed of pitches continues, but league managers want to force some resolution and authorized a test for two weeks of the strike board. (We re-tested the strike mat, which was also tested in 2008, during Weeks 1 and 2, with almost no success.)

The PWL strike board tested during Week 3 is modeled on the one used by one of our favorite wiffleball league websites, HRL: Twin Cities, from Eagan and Hopkins, Minnesota. The strike zone was 20 inches wide (home plate is 17), 30 inches tall, and placed 3 feet behind the tip of home plate. HRL is a “medium-fast” pitch league, who regulates the speed of pitches using a radar gun to ensure pitchers aren’t throwing too hard. They also pitch from a 39 feet pitchers rubber, ours is 30 feet.

The strike board was not enforced, and will also not be next week, though we did expect more peer pressure to call strikes on yourself (the honorable thing to do), when pitches hit the board. After the two week test, the league will get feedback from players and the managers will host a post-season summit, likely at the Champion’s Dinner, to discuss a proposal for changes next season.

In actual game news, we had a perfect game tossed by Dallas Brown of Joe Buck Yourself as they beat Flaglove. A near perfect game by Tony Ragano, which would have been his career third, was ruined by a error on a fly ball attributed to Tim Davin. For those of you scoring at home, this is just another in a long list of reasons Tony can yell at Tim. Ragano held on for the no hitter, only the second no-hitter that wasn’t perfect in league history.

Don’t look now, but Ragano is on the league leader list for five of the six pitching and hitting categories. We know he’s the most competitive player in the league, if you believe what you read in the paper, but is it possible he’s now the best player in the league?

And, a record low four homers were hit all day. It’s possible that no one will get nominated for Player of the Week.

Week 2 (Su09): Return of the Long Ball

written by Commissioner Gallaway

Week 2 was as hot as Week 1, but the ball started moving more, much to the dismay of pitchers. The home runs flew and we started to get to know some of the new kids a little more.

The Commish had predicted Alcoholics Anonymous at Joe Buck Yourself would be the game of the week to watch. It wasn’t bad, but the walk off Flaglove homer to beat the Singleton Lodge Sluggers in the bottom of the sixth 7-6 was definitely the game of the week. It was Jesse Contario’s third dinger of the game, and he might just have earned Flaglove their first nominee for POTW.

Despite all the new teams, some with real talent, old favorites Clubber Lang and the Canvassers improved to 4-0 and sit on top of their divisions.
