Week 3 saw the debut of the PWL’s great experiment. No, we are not talking about breaking the league color barrier, though, that could use some work too. We’re talking about the strike board. The seasons long debate over called strikes and speed of pitches continues, but league managers want to force some resolution and authorized a test for two weeks of the strike board. (We re-tested the strike mat, which was also tested in 2008, during Weeks 1 and 2, with almost no success.)
The PWL strike board tested during Week 3 is modeled on the one used by one of our favorite wiffleball league websites, HRL: Twin Cities, from Eagan and Hopkins, Minnesota. The strike zone was 20 inches wide (home plate is 17), 30 inches tall, and placed 3 feet behind the tip of home plate. HRL is a “medium-fast” pitch league, who regulates the speed of pitches using a radar gun to ensure pitchers aren’t throwing too hard. They also pitch from a 39 feet pitchers rubber, ours is 30 feet.
The strike board was not enforced, and will also not be next week, though we did expect more peer pressure to call strikes on yourself (the honorable thing to do), when pitches hit the board. After the two week test, the league will get feedback from players and the managers will host a post-season summit, likely at the Champion’s Dinner, to discuss a proposal for changes next season.
In actual game news, we had a perfect game tossed by Dallas Brown of Joe Buck Yourself as they beat Flaglove. A near perfect game by Tony Ragano, which would have been his career third, was ruined by a error on a fly ball attributed to Tim Davin. For those of you scoring at home, this is just another in a long list of reasons Tony can yell at Tim. Ragano held on for the no hitter, only the second no-hitter that wasn’t perfect in league history.
Don’t look now, but Ragano is on the league leader list for five of the six pitching and hitting categories. We know he’s the most competitive player in the league, if you believe what you read in the paper, but is it possible he’s now the best player in the league?
And, a record low four homers were hit all day. It’s possible that no one will get nominated for Player of the Week.
