Week 4 (Su09): FF'd Up!

After three perfect weeks, Week 4 is the forfeit week thanks to our two F teams, Flaglove and Flea Bitten Varmits.

Don’t worry though, we more than made up for the four forfeits with a 21 inning game, that ended with the first loss on the season for Clubber Lang. The previous league record for an extra inning game was 10.

Next week is an off week for Labor Day, but watch your email for a survey on the strike board and don’t forget to join us for Thursday Night Wiffleball a week from Thursday, 9/10 @ 6:00 PM.

There were a lot of things that angered me about today’s game, but I’ll will just save my ranting for the strike board debate.

First, I’m absolutely against the strike board. I think it breaks the hitters concentration every time the ball hits it and the batter has to chase after it. It’s not a lot of work for the batter to get the ball and throw it back to the pitcher, but I can’t be worried about getting the ball every while trying to hit. I think it’s part of the reason scores have been down the past couple of weeks. If you look closely, every game was a shutout.

Second point, there was mention of a strike board without having balls, which is absolutely insane. Every game is going to be 1-0 because the pitcher is going to take advantage and “try to make the perfect pitch”. I’m not accusing any one pitcher, but I shouldn’t haven’t to watch 5 bad pitches go by in a row and then the pitcher complain because I didn’t swing at the next pitch, which was a strike at 40mph.

There would still be issues with using a strike board, but at least if you do and you have balls and strikes, the pitcher would be forced to come down the middle of the plate once in a while when behind in the count.

Last and again not mentioning any names, half of the umpires aren’t even paying attention to the game. Anyways, I’m willing to pay as much as the league want to charge, but I think we need to go with paid umps that call balls and strikes.

One more thing on the balls/intentional walk debate. I don’t think there are any hitters in the league this season you would intentionally walk, unless you had first base open, plus it would only apply to late in the game. Remember, we don’t have 90 foot base paths, it’s very possible a runner can score from first on a long base hit, it probably only takes 5-6 seconds for a runner to score from first, but intentionally walking someone would be the last thing I would want to do unless it was a desperate situation that called for it.
